Google Simplifies Hacking Group Naming System

Google has introduced a simplified naming system for hacking groups, replacing its previous approach with a more straightforward approach. The new system assigns a memorable first name and a second word indicating the country of origin, such as Castle for China or Ion for Iran. This change aims to bring clarity to security researchers both inside and outside the company, who often struggle to keep track of the numerous hacking groups operating globally.

The previous system, adopted from Mandiant, used numerical designations like APT1 or APT41. However, this system was found to be confusing and difficult to navigate. Google's chief technology officer of the Threat Intelligence Group, Shane Huntley, led the revamp, which aims to provide a unified resource for tracking hacking groups.

The new system is part of Google's ongoing efforts to enhance cybersecurity and provide a valuable resource for security researchers, policymakers, and the wider public. By simplifying the naming system, Google hopes to improve collaboration and information-sharing between different stakeholders and ultimately contribute to a safer online environment.
