Bor, an open-source policy management tool for Linux desktops, has released version 0.8.0. This update brings significant enhancements to the tool's functionality and usability.

The new release adds three new policy types: Thunderbird, Microsoft Edge for Business, and Firewalld zones. The Thunderbird policy type allows for the management of Mozilla Thunderbird on enrolled desktops, using the same mechanism as Firefox ESR. The agent writes the managed policies.json file, which is merged from all bound policies and protected by a tamper watcher.

The Microsoft Edge for Business policy type enables the management of Edge on Linux fleets, writing the bor_managed.json file into each managed-policy directory and cleaning it up when the last bound policy is removed. The web UI provides a tree-based editor with JSON validation and a setting preview.

The Firewalld zone policy type manages firewalld zones on enrolled nodes, including services, ports, forward ports, rich rules, masquerade, interfaces, sources, and the zone target. The agent writes zone XML to /etc/firewalld/zones/ and validates it with firewall-cmd --check-config.

The update also includes a full web UI overhaul and finer-grained role-based access control (RBAC). The tool detects and enforces Flatpak installations alongside RPM/DEB installations, providing a more comprehensive management experience.

The release of Bor v0.8.0 marks a significant milestone for the open-source project, offering enhanced functionality and usability for Linux desktop management.
