ICE Faces Backlash Over Fatal Shooting in Houston

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is facing intense scrutiny over a fatal shooting in Houston, Texas. On Tuesday, ICE officers killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 33-year-old Mexican immigrant, during a traffic stop. Advocates are demanding the release of bodycam footage, which ICE claims was not available due to a 76-day government shutdown.

The shutdown, which occurred earlier this year, was caused by congressional bickering over reforms to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). ICE claims that the shutdown prevented the agency from receiving additional federal funding, which would have allowed the agents involved in the shooting to wear body cameras.

They point to previous incidents, such as the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, where DHS accused victims of attacking agents despite video evidence showing otherwise.

ICE spokespersons have claimed that Salgado Araujo 'weaponized his vehicle' to attack an ICE officer, echoing claims made after other shootings. However, the accuracy of these claims remains unclear without access to the bodycam footage.
