WhatsApp Introduces Group Chat Management Tools and Indefinite Pinning

WireByte Staff · October 31, 2026

WhatsApp is rolling out four new features to enhance group chat management, including indefinite message pinning, a mentions filter, retroactive message sharing, and group-specific status updates. These updates aim to reduce clutter and improve communication efficiency in large groups, with availability varying by region and device.

Key points

  • WhatsApp is introducing a 'Mentions and replies' filter in the drawer to help users quickly locate unread group messages where they were specifically mentioned or replied to.
  • The platform now allows users to pin messages in group chats indefinitely, removing previous time limits of 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days.
  • Users can now send recent messages retroactively to new group members by tapping their name in the chat, a feature previously restricted to when adding members.
  • A new group status sharing feature enables members to post updates visible only to the group, with reactions and additions allowed before the 24-hour expiry.
  • These features are being rolled out gradually, meaning availability may vary depending on the user's region and device type.

Enhanced Group Chat Controls

WhatsApp has announced the introduction of four new features designed to streamline the management of group chats. The updates, detailed in a recent blog post, focus on improving navigation, message visibility, and interaction within group settings. These changes address common user complaints regarding information overload and the difficulty of tracking relevant conversations in large groups.

The first major addition is a new filter option within the conversation drawer. When users swipe down on their chat list, they will now see a "Mentions and replies" button alongside existing filters such as Groups, Favorites, and Unread. Selecting this option filters the chat list to display only unread group conversations where the user was either mentioned directly or received a direct reply. This also includes messages sent to "@all," ensuring users do not miss critical communications amidst the noise of general group activity.

Indefinite Message Pinning

A significant change to message pinning functionality has also been implemented. Previously, users could only pin messages in group chats for limited durations, specifically 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days. The new update removes these time constraints, allowing users to pin messages indefinitely. This change is particularly relevant for groups that rely on pinned information for ongoing reference, such as event details, shared resources, or important announcements that remain relevant over long periods.

Retroactive Message Sharing

WhatsApp is also introducing a feature that allows users to send recent messages retroactively to new group members. Previously, this functionality was only available when initially adding a person to a group. Now, if a user joins a group after a conversation has already taken place, existing members can tap the new member's name in the chat to share recent messages. This helps new participants catch up on context and ongoing discussions without requiring manual forwarding of multiple messages.

Group Status Updates

The platform is also rolling out group status sharing, a feature that allows users to post updates visible only to the members of a specific group. These statuses function similarly to individual status updates but are confined to the group context. Members can view, react to, and add their own statuses to the group feed. Like individual statuses, these group updates disappear after 24 hours, providing a temporary space for group-specific announcements or casual updates without cluttering the main chat history.

Rollout and Availability

As with many WhatsApp updates, the rollout of these features is gradual. Users may not see these changes immediately, as availability depends on various factors including region, device type, and app version. The company has not provided a specific timeline for when all users will have access to these features. Users can check for updates by ensuring their WhatsApp application is current. The full announcement and additional details are available on the WhatsApp blog.

Key takeaways

  • WhatsApp adds a 'Mentions and replies' filter to help users find specific unread group messages.
  • Message pinning in groups is now indefinite, removing previous time limits.
  • Users can share recent messages with new members by tapping their name in the chat.
  • Group status sharing allows temporary updates visible only to group members.
  • Features are rolling out gradually and may not be immediately available to all users.
